Turn Off Traction Control Automatically on BMW M coupe

The following is a procedure that Bob Miller wrote on how to turn off traction control automatically every time the car starts.

Bob Miller's Turning Off Traction Control Procedure

The Basics

What Bob has come up with is a resistor and capacitor network across the power leads of the traction control switch. See figure below:

A few modifications to the procedure are needed for the M coupe:

  • To get to the traction control switch, pull up on the edge of the shift boot to gain access to the center console, pull aside the sound insulation, insert your hand underneath the console and up to the switch, using your fingers squeeze the tabs on the top and bottom of the switch and push out the switch.
  • If you follow the procedure you can attach the resistor & capacitor to the switch connector. The connector on the M coupe does not have the addition hardware attached to it as discussed in the procedure.
  • Another option of attachment is to use Tap-In Squeeze Connector or you can use Quick-Disconnect Tap-In Squeeze Connector. If you ever want to remove the modification you are either a wire cut or quick-disconnect away. If you use the Tap-In connector you need to add a few inches of 18-gauge wire to the resistor and capacitor ends. If you use two different color wires it will be easy to remember which end is which and be sure to insulate the wire and components by using heat shrink tubing or you can use electrician's tape.
  • The wiring and connector layout are different on the M coupe. The connector has only four (4) pins and they are numbered 1-4. The resistor and capacitor are attached pin # 1 and pin #4. Resistor end goes to pin #1 (red wire with white strip) capacitor end goes to pin #4 (green wire with blue strip). If you are using Tap-In connectors; attach the wire that goes to the resistor to the red wire with white strip, and attach the wire that goes to the capacitor to the green wire with blue strip.

  • (1) 470 uF, 35 V capacitor, Radio Shack Cat. No. 272-1018
  • (1) 2.2K ohm resistor, Radio Shack Cat. No. 271-1121
  • Heat Shrink tubing, Radio Shack Cat. No. 278-1627
    or electrician's tape
  • 18-gauge Hookup Wire, Radio Shack Cat. No. 278-1223
  • Option 1
    (2) Tap-In Squeeze Connectors, Radio Shack Cat. No. 64-3052
  • Option 2
    (2) Quick-Disconnect Tap-In Squeeze Connectors,
