What happens when the Instrument Cluster is replaced?
When the cluster is replaced a red dot (LED) comes on (a "Tamper" indicator) next to the mileage to indicate that the cluster
has been replaced.
The light can be turned off by running a test sequence done by the dealer.
The mileage information is stored in two places: the instrument cluster and an undisclosed location by BMW.
Are there any "Easter Eggs"?
To display hidden menus:
- Turn off the ignition.
- Push and hold down the trip odometer reset button on the speedometer. Turn the ignition key to position one (first click) while still holding the reset button.
- The DME will display a few of it's internal registers in the mileage/LED space.
- Next all the gauges on the dash will cycle from zero to full scale and back again at the same time all the warning lights are illuminated.
The registers displayed are:
- Vehicle identification number
- Number for BMW internal use
- Number of wheel rotations needed to make up one kilometer
- Software version
- Hardware version
- Index of changes
If the car battery is disconnected will the Service Indicator loose it's information?
No, the Service Indicator has a backup battery in the instrument cluster.
When the fuel lamp comes on, how much fuel is in the tank?
Approximately 2.1 gallons (8 liters).
